Tried to disable translation of the custom field again and still got the same AJAX HTTP error. I also copied, pasted and renamed default.settings.php to settings.php. I looked in the php_error logs and found an memory allocation issue. Since setting the execution time has no effect on the expiration time for the load balancer, this won't help as per the above posts, so those fixes won't work for everyone. The domain points directly into the drupal directory, but had reached this point and was at a loss for anything to try that made sense. It seems that we cannot just add php_value memory_limit 128M line to the end of the file, seems to make it an invalid content structure?
