After building a new 2012 VM, and DCPromo'ing it, I transfered the FSMO roles to a stable server and set out to demote and decommission the 2008 machine. Rerun dcpromo, everything worked. my server is not configured any domain and working inworkgroup (all users using RDP) .this is freshly installed server which was created yesterday. Take ownership, add permissions, paste the files. I should have been more persistent in my attempts. Currently, please open regedit and verify HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LDAP\Clsid exists. It says "an error without a description has occurred". Recently I wanted to add a new user, but I cannot set the password for him.
