If you ever need to bootup the drive on another computer simply tell that computer to start using the external drive as the startup drive. But I had several old Firewire hard drives laying around. I reboot and try again and since then I have not been able to see the mac HD in the drive selection window. I was able to partition the external drive and restore the dmg file to one of the partitions, but startup disk won't recognize anything to reboot from.
